The Markham Interviews

This website is dedicated to the interviews that Sheila Markham is conducting with members of the antiquarian book trade, a field of commerce that has always been rich in colourful and eccentric personalities.

Since 1991 Sheila Markham has interviewed over 120 rare book dealers who have spoken frankly about their life and work during a period of exceptional change. A selection of 50 of these interviews was published in 2004 in A Book of Booksellers. Conversations with the Antiquarian Book Trade in a limited edition of 500 copies, now out of print. It was reprinted in 2007 in a paperback edition with Oak Knoll Press. To order a copy, please see Publishing.

In the Spring of 2014, A Second Book of Booksellers was published, in a limited edition of 500 copies, for which full details are available on the Publishing page of this website.

The full text of 44 interviews yet to appear in book-form may be found in the Interview Archive, described by Ian Jackson as ‘an essential archive of book-trade history, with biographical information available nowhere else’.
